Jama Masjid is one of the popular places to visit in Srirangapatna which is located at a distance of around 23 km from Mysore. It was constructed in the year of 1784 by Tipu Sultan when he began his rule in Mysore Kingdom. Also known as Masjid-e-Ala, this mosque is not only a religiously significant shrine but has equally prominent historical significance. It is said that this is the mosque where the first imamanth was performed by Tipu Sultan himself. It also boasts of being one of the favourite places of Tipu Sultan. This mosque is situated near the Bangalore Gate of the Srirangapatna Fort.
This two stories mosque has captivating architecture. It has impressive looking towers and two predominant minarets that are built on high platform. One can reach the top of the minarets by climbing around 200 steps. The mesmerising view of the surrounding area from the top of the minaret is worth watching.
There is small dome which has is painted in white colour. There is also an open court in the front of the mosque and a covered porch. The prayer hall, Mihrab is located on the western side of the mosque. The walls and ceilings of Jama Masjid have intricate ornamentation. There are also inscriptions on the walls mentioning 99 names of Allah.
The clock in the masjid which is close to 100 years old is another big attraction. The clock is still in working condition. A religious school, Madrasa is also located within the compound of the mosque. It is also said that Late Abdul Hafeez Junaidi was the only imam of the mosque who had offered his prayers for continuously 50 years.
