Situated in Srirampura, Lingabudi Lake is a freshwater lake that is about 8 km from the heart of the city. This lake was built by Mysore Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III in the year 1828. With an area of almost 260 acres, this lake is largest as well as the oldest lake in Mysore. It is an ideal place to visit if you are looking for a place away from the hustle-bustle and crowds of tourist places. This lake offers a scenic setting for visitors to relax in the midst of lush greenery and soothing expanse of water. Along with this, it also boasts of having more than 250 kinds of avian fauna.

Fauna at Lingabudi Lake

It is quite popular for its rich avian fauna. Also a bio-diversity park, an approximate of 250 varied species of birds can be found here. Various rare species of bird can be spotted during the migratory season; birds from all over the world fly to this place during the said season. Many migratory birds come to this lake and the area around in the month of September; they again fly to the lake in the month of March and April and make it their breeding place.

White Ibis, open bill storks, little cormorants, kingfishers, spoonbills, egrets, river terns, etc. are some of the common birds that can be seen here. Other water birds that visit Lingabudi Lake are green sandpiper, Terek sandpiper, common sandpiper, spotted sandpiper, common teal, pintail, gull billed tern, black headed gull, thick-billed green pigeon (possible escapee), brown headed gull, black bellied tern, European roller, Eurasian curlew, curlew sandpiper, Pallas’s grasshopper warbler, pied avocet, shoveller, etc. Even butterflies such as chestnut gaudy baron, streaked sailer, and peacock royal can also be spotted here.

Flora at Lingabudi Lake

Its natural beauty is worth remembering and does make for beautiful pictures. Various flowering plants such rose, hibiscus, marigold and more add on to its overall beauty. The area is adorned with trees such as gulmohar, silver oaks, climbers and creepers.

Visitors can be seen going for morning and evening walks around the lake; the park here presents a decent location to spend some quiet time with your loved ones. However, in order to maintain the calmness of the surroundings and keep the nature unaltered for the migratory birds; recreational activities such as boating are not offered here. Owing to its natural beauty it does make for a perfect location for photography so do carry your camera while visiting Lingabudi Lake.

The garden, beside the lake is a major attraction. It is a perfect place if you want to sit and admire the exquisite beauty of the place. There are many stone benches at the park as well. Whether you want to have a romantic walk with your partner by the side of the lake or a picnic with your family at the garden, it is suitable for all. The lake has been fenced from all the side, with just one gate for entrance. You can visit anytime from 6 am to 6 pm.

Reaching Lingabudi Lake

Lingabudi Lake is located at a distance of about 10 km from the Mysore railway station and about 12 km from KSRTC bus stand. From centre of the Mysore city also it is not very far. This lake is easily accessible as many buses run through this route. Visitors can also take auto-rickshaw or hire a cab to the lake.
